Information which may suggest that the Government has taken steps to promote the concept of pro-active Carbon Credit is not readily available. On January 19, 2015, while chairing a meeting of the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, called for a paradigm shift in global attitudes towards climate change, from "carbon credit", towards "green credit". However, further information about the same is unavailable.
The Government stated in the Lok Sabha on August 6, 2014, that it has not introduced any Green Credit Scheme in the country. However, the Central Government has received the proposal by the name of Green Credit Scheme from the State Government of Gujarat. This proposal envisages advancing the obligatory compensatory afforestation in cases of diversion of forest land under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. The proposal has been examined in the Ministry and requires approval of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. The State Government of Gujarat has been advised to approach the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India for obtaining further directions.
We are presently collating further information on this promise and will be updating it accordingly. However, till such time, this promise will be rated as "Not Started".
